WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY News

IFCO sponsors the first cooling van for Spanish food bank Banco de Alimentos in Madrid

Pullach/Madrid, July 13, 2012 - As part of the international expansion of the WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY initiative, IFCO, in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz and Sabeco, supports the Banco de Alimentos in Madrid, Spain, through the donation of a new cooling van for the delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILTIY initiative was established in 2010 by IFCO, who is the leading provider of Reusable Plastic Container (RPCs), in order to help food banks all across the world store and transport foodstuffs to the needy through supply of IFCO’s green crates and co-financing Mercedes-Benz’s delivery vehicle.

As the first Spanish partner of the initiative, the Banco de Alimentos Madrid has been provided with over 10,000 environmentally friendly RPCs and is thereby benefiting of a network of closely cooperating, experienced sponsors, who place a strong emphasis on improving the carbon footprint through the replacement of cardboard boxes with reusable packaging.

In 2012 and in Germany alone, more than 25 food banks are utilizing over 30,000 environmentally friendly IFCO crates, as well as new cooling vans, which are sponsored through the WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY partners and are optimized for transporting chilled food. First international events were recently hosted for example in Vienna, Austria, where prominent guests from politics and the media handed-over the new cooling van to the food bank.

“The Banco de Alimentos in Madrid has been founded in 1994 and since then has distributed roughly 70 million kilograms of food to the local needy. Our 120 regular supporters are looking forward to work with the new delivery vehicle”, says Javier Espinosa Martínez, President of the Banco de Alimentos de Madrid, the Madrid food bank.

“IFCO is proud to be able to support the food bank of Madrid’s honorable effort to supply foo to the needy of the Madrid region. We supply the Banco de Alimentos with RPCs – to enable to optimally transport fresh produce in a space- and cost-saving way”, says Manuel Montero, IFCO Vice President of the South European Region.

Leading RPC Provider Continues Worldwide Responsibility Initiative through Support of Top Connecticut Food Bank TAMPA, June 19, 2012

IFCO SYSTEMS, the global leader in Reusable Plastic Containers (RPCs) for fresh products, today announced that it will provide containers to Foodshare, a Connecticut-based charity that targets hunger issues. Foodshare will use the RPCs to transport produce and other grocery products from its facility in Bloomfield, Connecticut to about 300 partner locations in the greater Hartford area.

The RPCs IFCO is providing will improve the productivity of Foodshare’s delivery system and reduce product damage while decreasing environmental impact. IFCO is proud of our new partnership with Foodshare and of the commitment we’ve made to supporting food banks throughout the world,” said Fred Heptinstall, President and General Manager IFCO SYSTEMS US.

Foodshare is the heart of greater Hartford’s fight against hunger, bringing together individuals and organizations to create effective solutions to end hunger in all 42 towns of Hartford and Tolland counties. Since 1982, Foodshare has sought to end hunger in this region. Working in partnership with other community leaders such as the United Way, End Hunger Connecticut! and 211 Infoline, Foodshare has the experience and is building the networks necessary to help make this vision a reality.

“The IFCO RPCs will help us improve the effectiveness of our delivery process, ensuring that the right produce and groceries get to needy families and individuals in the Hartford community in good condition when they need them. We’re also moving to a more environmentally-friendly system by replacing corrugate boxes with RPCs,“ said Stephen Slipchinsky, Regional Market Project Manager, Foodshare.

As the market leader with more than 170 million RPCs in circulation worldwide, IFCO is the leading provider of reusable containers to the fresh food sector. IFCO handles all RPC logistics, from manufacturing to cleaning to re-entry into the supply chain. After retail use, IFCO RPCs are folded, collected and shipped back to one of IFCO’s service facilities, where they are sanitized and prepared for re-use.

IFCO enables the Wiener Tafel’s environmentally friendly transport of frozen food

Vienna - New cooling vehicle donationThrough the donation of € 13,000, the logistics service provider IFCO enables the Wiener Tafel to acquire a gas powered frozen-food transport van and provides them with 500 reusable containers for transporting food.

Vienna/Pullach, 14 June 2012 – Together with Ulli Sima, city-councillor for the environment, and TV star Christian Clerici, a prominent Tafel supporter, Heimo Thaler, the managing director of IFCO-Austria, hands over a gas-powered van, capable of refrigerating and delivering frozen food, to the Wiener Tafel. For the first time in its 13-year history, the Wiener Tafel is capable supplying the needy with large amounts of frozen food.

“This acquisition was made possible by a strong sustainable network of cooperation partners and sponsors” said Ulli Schmidt, the managing director of the Wiener Tafel.

Besides IFCO, whose foldable, space-saving reusable containers will be used for environmentally friendly transport in new van, Mercedes Benz and SAP are, among others, supporters of the Wiener Tafel. Other possibilities of cooperation will be initiated within the framework of the WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY project by the POWERGROUP, as is the case in other global projects in support of food banks.

The Wiener Tafel carries the EcoBusinessPlan Vienna certification (click here for EcoBusinessPlan) and supports environmental protection in all areas. In matters of transport and logistics, the use of alternate energy such as natural-gas and the gradual changeover to reusable transport containers play an important role – in comparison to one-way corrugated containers, foldable reusable containers allow an up to 53% reduction of CO2 emissions over the entire transport process.

“I am pleased to find that frozen foods can now also be transported by natural-gas powered vans. As natural-gas powered motors produce no respirable dust, the environment is directly protected and an example is set for the use of alternate sources of energy” said city councilor Ulla Sima, who is responsible for EcoBusinessPlan Vienna. The goals of the Vienna municipality are for both businesses and the environment to make and a receive a ‘clean’ profit through ecologically-sound business management and to secure high quality and financial advantages through the stewardship of environmental protection within companies.
