WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY News

Behind the Curtain at Fruit Logistica

FL tafel 2012

The Berliner Tafel’s operations at the fair must be well organized in order to ensure that the highly perishable goods reach the needy as quickly as possible.

The world’s largest such fair, Fruit Logistica is the premiere meeting place of the international produce trade. Around 2,400 companies present every imaginable sort of fruit and vegetables. The starting gun for the workers of the Berliner Tafel is fired on the last evening, after all the visitors have left the halls: over 350 volunteers gather together all of the produce displayed at the vast fair. Some 3,000 green reusable crates provided by IFCO stand ready to be filled with goods. The ecological aspects of the operation play a major role, as the Berliner Tafel fully subscribes to the principles of IFCO’s WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY initiative: the operation exclusively employs environmentally friendly reusable containers.

On the same evening, more than 30 trucks bring the goods to a central collection point at the fairgrounds where the sorting work begins: the most fragile produce must be delivered first. The entire operation requires a detailed timing plan and depends on helpers who are trained to know their sorting priorities and those goods which have a short shelf life must be delivered to the needy immediately.

The balance of the sorting process takes two days, always assuring that the most fragile produce gets the highest priority. All in all, more than 150 tonnes of fruit and vegetables, an impressive amount which would normally end up in the refuse heap, is rescued, sorted and packed for delivery to Berlin’s needy.

In the Shadows of Wealth

tower article

Even in London, the Borough of Tower Hamlets is something of an anomaly.   Covering an area of circa 20km² and housing nearly 240,000 people, it is home to the wealthiest and the poorest people in London. With Canary Wharf in its boundaries, the wealth is undeniable, but what isn’t always seen is the poverty in the other areas within the district. The borough has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the country; in 2010 57 percent of children were living in poverty, as defined by the Campaign to End Child Poverty in their review covering England, compared to a figure of 46 percent in the London Borough of Islington, which had the second highest rate.  It also has a high rate of unemployment, and despite the average salary for people working in Tower Hamlets being £64,000, almost 40% of households live on less than £15,000.

It is against this backdrop that the Tower Hamlets Foodbank operates. Set up in 2010 under the umbrella of the Trussell Trust organisation, the Tower Hamlets Foodbank is responding directly to local people experiencing hardship as a result of some of these social and economic issues. Using a network of churches within the borough, they are able to offer support in many areas, providing emergency food and grocery supplies to those that are in greatest need.  The basic tenet of their operation is one of prevention rather than remedy. By providing everyday essentials the aim is to prevent people becoming homeless rather than directly assisting the homeless. Consequently, one of their biggest challenges is one of logistics. Since recently, the Foodbank receives strong support by IFCO the international provider of green reusable crates, which enables the Foodbank to tackle one of their major aims: the reduction of waste, as occurs with the disposal of one-way outer packaging and hence lay an even stronger focus on the sourcing and distribution of food.

The Collaboration of IFCO Systems Spain and the Food Bank of Madrid

Madrid, 16 February, 2012.- The multinational company IFCO Systems has decided to help the Food Bank of Madrid by providing free use of their RPCs (Reusable Plastic Container) required for the distribution of food, significantly improving all packaging and shipping tasks, while avoiding the use of non-reusable containers that damage the environment. The cooperation and altruism of IFCO allows the Food Bank of Madrid to facilitate the necessary operations of receiving food from its various supply partners and delivering to the charitable institutions that it serves.

Besides the above mentioned advantages, the RPCs are easier to handle and stack which speeds up the entire process for a fast and secure collection of large volumes of food. The Food Bank Foundation of Madrid welcomes this joint initiative with IFCO Systems which will support of their work with charitable organizaitons serving those in need

IFCO also welcomes this partnership which falls into their corporate social responsibility program called “WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY”, which the company uses to partner with food banks and other charities in countries and cities all over the world.

The Food Bank Foundation of Madrid (www.bamadrid.org) is a charitable non-profit organization aimed at procuring donations and distributing food between recognized charities that are dedicated to health and direct care of people in need (the mentally and physically handicapped, the elderly, underprivelaged children, marginalized families, recovering drug addicts, AIDS patients, etc…) in the area of Madrid.
