IFCO Partners with Forgotten Harvest in Fight Against Hunger

Fred-Heptinstall-and-Susan-Goodell-1

IFCO SYSTEMS’ Fred Heptinstall, President and General Manager IFCO RPC Management Services NA, Hillary Femal, Director of Strategic Market Development and Susan Goodell, President and CEO of Forgotten Harvest, announced their new partnership this morning at the opening of the 2011 Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Summit. IFCO is proud to support Forgotten Harvest, an organization that relieves hunger in the Detroit metropolitan community by rescuing surplus, prepared and perishable food and donating it to emergency food providers.

“IFCO will be providing Forgotten Harvest food rescue with Reusable Plastic Containers (RPCs) to use in their delivery system,” said Heptinstall. “IFCO is very proud of this new partnership with Forgotten Harvest and our commitment to supporting this and other food banks throughout the world.”

“Using IFCO RPCs will make a huge difference in the effort to feed local communities,“ said Ms. Goodell. “IFCO’s RPCs represent exactly the type of partnership we thrive on. By replacing corrugate boxes with RPCs, we will be able to provide better produce to our clients, improve our distribution, and reduce waste in the process.“

Forgotten Harvest was formed in 1990 to fight two problems: hunger and waste. By collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from more than 450 sources, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors and other Health Department-approved sources. This donated food, over 23 million pounds in 2010 alone, is delivered free-of-charge to over 200 emergency food providers in the Metro Detroit area. Forgotten Harvest is a member of the Feeding America network, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity.

As the market leader with over 125 million containers in circulation worldwide, IFCO has perfected the reusable plastic container (RPC) model. IFCO handles all container logistics, from manufacturing to cleaning to re-entry into the supply chain. After retail use, IFCO RPCs are folded, collected, and shipped back to our service facilities, where they are sanitized and prepared for re-use.

IFCO expands its Food Bank support

fruit logisticaThe international logistics service provider for environmentally friendly transport of fruit and vegetables expands its support of the Tafel, the German Food Banks as part of their WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY initiative. Today at Fruit Logistica, Karl Pohler, the CEO of IFCO, symbolically presented Sabine Werth, the chairperson of the Berliner Tafel, with the keys to three refrigerated vans. In the presence of Ilse Aigner, the Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, the BerlinerTafel also received 3,000 reusable containers for us in transporting the fresh produce displayed at the fair to Berlin’s needy.

Under WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY, IFCO furthers the changeover to reusable transport solutions and thus helps the Tafel to reduce its waste disposal costs. Further, In comparison to conventional corrugated packaging, IFCO’s reusable ‘green crates’ have considerable environmental advantages including reducing CO2 emissions by as much as 53% and ozone depletion by as much as 38%.

“We are most pleased to have a found in IFCO a long-term supporter of Der Tafel whose ‘green crates’ help us make an important contribution to environmental protection”, said Sabine Werth, the founder of the German Food Bank movement. IFCO has thus far equipped Food Banks in Germany, the UK, Brazil and Argentina with over 14, 000 environmentally friendly reusable containers and in the USA provides them for the transport of fruit and vegetables direct from growers to the tables of the needy.

“For us, sustainable social responsibility as part the WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY initiative is a matter of great concern. We will continue to support the Tafel with gratis reusable containers and the co-financing of transport vehicles in the coming years” said Karl Pohler. “The job of the Food Banks — logistically optimized transport from producer to end-user — is the same as our original business field. IFCO and the Tafel are perfect partners.”

IFCO sponsoring delights at the 2011 Tafel Federal Congress in Kassel

tafel 2011 06 news

The engagement of IFCO in support of the Bundesverband Deutsche Tafel e.V., a WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY initiative which started in December 2009, takes on new dimensions. Thus far, 24 local Tafel organisations have been outfitted with reusable containers. IFCO has expanded this support globally: food banks in Argentina, Brazil, the UK and the USA have also been supplied with reusable containers. IFCO’s intention is to help the food banks convert to sustainable reusable containers thus reducing their costs of disposing of wasteful one-way packaging.

As part of the City-Wager campaign at the Tafel Federal Congress of 23-26 June, IFCO provided the Kassel food bank with over 1000 ‘green crates’ to collect and store donated foodstuff. Kassel’s Lord Mayor Bertram Hilgen wagered that his city would donate a minimum of 11 tonnes of food. This was in fact over-achieved to the factor of three! Kassel citizens donated over 10 tonnes and REWE and PENNY topped that up with an additional 25 tonnes.

Michael Meierhöfer, Managing Director of IFCO Systems Deutschland GmbH, announced the co-sponsoring of an additional 10 refrigerated vans over the next 12 months. Working with their partners Lidl and Mercedes Benz, IFCO had thus far helped the Tafel to acquire 20 such vans which are used to safely transport the fresh food so urgently required by the needy.

Mr. Meierhöfer said that “We are delighted that our sponsoring helps the Tafel to support those in need. Sustainable social engagement, part of our WORLDWIDE RESPONSIBILITY initiative, is a matter of great concern to us. We’re particularly delighted that our reusable containers make a substantial contribution to protecting the environment.”
